FIELD: optics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to optical engineering and may be used as an element of the optical isolation Faraday effect for lasers with subkilowatt average radiating power. Faraday isolator with inhomogeneous magnetic field for high-power lasers contains the following parts successively arranged on the optical axis: polariser, magnetooptic rotator installed in the magnetic system made using permanent magnets, and an analyser. Inside the magnetic system which creates field in the forward direction of radiation passage there is an additional magnetic system which creates a minor field in the return direction of radiation passage with high transverse nonuniformity.

EFFECT: due to transverse nonuniformity of the field of overall magnetic system, compensation of axially-symmetric polarisation distortions in Faraday isolator takes place, and this may be used to increase the degree of the device isolation, as well as to increase its maximum allowable operating power.
