FIELD: technological processes.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to controlling production of hydrogen gas or ethane from methane. Method for selective generation of hydrogen or of ethane involves selection of a suitable temperature over 300 °C, with a metal catalyst at the selected temperature and selected pressure to produce a product gas including hydrogen or ethane. wherein at temperatures greater than 1,300 °C for complete conversion of methane to solid carbon and hydrogen, and at temperature of over 300 °C - product, having molar ratio hydrogen/ethane at least 5. Metal catalyst includes a ruthenium nanoparticles. Molar ratio of methane and catalyst ranges from 10:1 to 100,000:1.
EFFECT: flexible method of converting methane, which enables to obtain various products without replacement of equipment and catalyst, which increases efficiency of production is provided.
