FIELD: radar ranging and radio navigation.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to radars and can be used in on-board navigation systems. Mentioned result is achieved due to that, a radar altimeter system (RAS) adapted to a smooth water surface includes a high-speed broadband amplifier with certain interrelations and logic of use within the RAS emitting in the direction of the underlying surface and receiving reflected from the underlying surface short packages of radio pulses, which in the receiver are converted into bipolar video pulses, fluctuorizing by amplitude with the frequency determined by the Doppler frequency shift of signals frequency, and ground velocity vector components are determined by maximum of the cross-correlation function of spatially spaced apart signals reflected from the underlying surface received by spaced antennae arranged onboard an aircraft taking into account geometry of the antenna system.
EFFECT: higher stability and accuracy of measurement of ground velocity vector components of an aircraft over a smooth water surface.
