FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods of electrothermal acceleration of solid bodies and is intended for acceleration of projectiles to high, over 1 km/s, velocities. Projectile with a bottom part in the form of a jar made from a dielectric material and filled with a polymer with high electrical conductivity is placed between conducting rails. Dielectric with the polymer are evaporated by applying high voltage to the rails, which causes an electric discharge between the rails through the surface of the polymer with provision by the electric discharge of additional heating of the obtained during evaporation high-temperature gas.

EFFECT: invention enables to achieve very high velocities.
