SUBSTANCE: in method for packing a beam of charged particles, the particles pass through the electric field in the device. The device comprises an annular electrode disposed in the direction of the beam between the first outer electrode and the second outer electrode. A time-dependent voltage signal is applied to the central electrode, the time characteristic of which is selected in such a way that the particles inside the device undergo the position-dependent speed variation, the speed variation characteristic being approximately sawtooth in the direction of the beam.
