FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: one or more cutters are obtained, each of which contains a base, a polycrystalline structure attached thereto, and residual stresses. The method includes the stages for determining a critical temperature and critical period of time for classified cutters in which the cutter becomes structurally damaged, determining the heat treatment temperature and the heat treatment time period based on the critical temperature and the critical time period, and heating one or more of the remaining cutters from classified cutters to given heat treatment temperature for given period of time. The device includes a heating chamber and a melting bath located in the chamber, the cutters are placed inside the preheated melting bath and insulated from oxygen during heating to heat treatment temperature for a heat treatment time period.

EFFECT: decrease the residual stress.
