FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: device for detecting scattered light signals comprises a light source (10) emitting light in one scattered light area (15), wherein the incident light determines the incidence axis (11), several optical sensors (21-30) for detecting scattered light, each of which is located at an angle (W1-W10) of the sensor relative to the incidence axis (11)). At least, one of the plurality of optical sensors (21-30) is a reference scattered light sensor, and an evaluation unit for evaluating signals detected by the optical sensors, while for classifying any particle type, the evaluation unit is configured to correlate the signal profiles of other optical sensors (21-30) with a signal profile of, at least, one reference sensor. The method for detecting scattered light signals includes the following steps: applying light to the scattered light area (15). The incident light determines the incidence axis (11) and the detection of scattered light reflected from any particles that may be present in the scattered light area (15) by means of several optical sensors (21-30), each of which is located at the angle (W1-W10) of the sensor relative to the incidence axis (11).
