FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: in the claimed device, neutrons are formed as a result of a nuclear synthesis reaction, when a neutron-generating target, for example, a target containing deuterium, is focused by a beam of deuterium ions. It is proposed to use a third-party high-current source of deuterium ions, based on a discharge maintained in an open magnetic trap by the powerful millimeter-wave gyroton radiation under electron-cyclotron resonance conditions. A specialized system is used to accelerate the deuterium ion beam, consisting of, at least, two accelerating electrodes, providing ion energy of the order of 100 keV and an extremely small beam emittance of less than 0.1⋅π⋅mm⋅mrad.
