FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a device for producing neutrons and can be used in fundamental and applied research: nuclear physics, spectrometry, neutron diffraction, medicine, safety systems, flaw detection, etc. Device uses an ion source based on the ECR discharge with quasi-gas-dynamic retention mode, the plasma in which is maintained by microwave radiation of a gyrotron of the millimeter wavelength range, and a system for generating and accelerating ions. Hole between the acceleration chamber and the chamber with the gas target is a channel whose dimensions correspond to the focal region of the above beam passing through it. In the developed device, the neutron flux with deuterium-containing target is estimated to exceed level 1011 n/s due to maintaining pressure in acceleration chamber at level 10-4 Torr and increasing pressure in reactor chamber to several Torr.
EFFECT: as a result, a high-current beam of accelerated deuterium ions with mean square reduced emittance not less than 0,05 π⋅mm⋅mrad is formed, with transverse size in focal area less than a millimeter and length of focal region of the order of several millimeters.
