FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to creation of continuous ion beams by their extraction from dense plasma created in open magnetic trap by powerful radiation of millimetre range of wavelengths. Device comprises a generator of continuous microwave radiation with frequency much higher than commonly used frequencies, for example, 28 GHz. Radiation from the generator successively passes the microwave radiation mode converter into a Gaussian beam, a quasioptical transmission line and a Gaussian beam converter into the mode of a circular waveguide which enters the discharge vacuum chamber. Use of the quasi-optical transmission line enables to electrically isolate the powerful gyrotron from the discharge vacuum chamber at high potential (up to 100 kV).

EFFECT: high current of ion beams while maintaining a given average ion charge.
