SUBSTANCE: method of determining at least one parameter of the sample adaptive offset is disclosed for encoding at least part of the image containing many samples. The method comprises determining at least one parameter of the sample adaptive offset other than the offset as a common parameter for both the first and the second chrominance components of the decoded sample. The said at least one parameter of the sample adaptive offset is determined based on the interdependencies between at least one of the first and the second chrominance components of the image sample and at least one corresponding component of the corresponding decoded sample.

EFFECT: optimizing the encoding or decoding of the compensation offsets for a set of restored image samples to provide an improvement in the encoding efficiency of the video codec and the decoding complexity.
