FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: method of separating the hydrophobic particulate material and its hydrophilic contaminant dispersed in the aqueous suspension comprises the following steps: a) stirring the aqueous suspension under high shear mixing conditions in the presence of the first hydrophobic liquid to form agglomerates of the hydrophobic particulate material; b) separating the agglomerates from the aqueous liquid and the dispersed hydrophilic contaminant; c) dispersing the agglomerates separated from the aqueous liquid and the dispersed hydrophilic contaminant in the second hydrophobic liquid such that water trapped between the particles constituting the said agglomerates is released from the hydrophobic particles; and d) separating the hydrophobic particles from the second hydrophobic liquid and water released from the said agglomerates, thereby obtaining hydrophobic particles substantially free of hydrophilic contaminant and water. The method for removing water trapped in a filter cake from hydrophobic particles comprises the steps of: a) dispersing the filter cake in a hydrophobic liquid such that the entrained water is released; and b) separating the hydrophobic particles from the hydrophobic liquid and released water, thereby obtaining hydrophobic particles substantially free of hydrophilic contaminant and water.
EFFECT: increasing the efficiency of separation of hydrophobic material, as well as the removal of water.
