FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: electrolyser comprises an anode, a cathode spaced from the anode, a molten electrolyte bath in fluidic communication with the anode and the cathode, an electrolyser housing having a side wall and a bottom and configured to retain the molten electrolyte bath, wherein the side wall has a polarised portion of the side wall portion and an unpolarised portion of the side wall, wherein the polarised portion of the side wall and the unpolarised portion of the side wall are adjacent to each other and are in fluidic communication with the molten electrolyte bath. A method for protecting the electrolyser side wall for producing aluminium against the electrolyte impact is also disclosed, comprising passing current from the anode through the molten electrolyte bath to the cathode in the electrolyser, supplying a feed material to the electrolyser at the place adjacent to the electrolyser side wall, with the possibility to hold the feed material in a trough formed next to the side wall, and maintaining the side wall in the molten electrolyte during the operation of the electrolyser due to the supplied feed material, wherein the side wall is made of at least one component which is present in the range of about 95%.

EFFECT: protection of the side wall from the electrolyte impact during the electrolyser operation is ensured.
