SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for starting up an electrolytic cell for aluminium production, electrolytic cell having a cathode block with an upper surface. Disclosed method comprises disposing contact resistance material on said upper surface of cathode block, lowering a plurality of anodes to abut contact resistance material, filling electrolytic cell to a height covering anodes with solid electrolyte material, containing crushed electrolytic bath material, cryolite, or mixtures thereof, delivering electrical current to anodes to at least partially melt solid electrolyte material and raising anodes when a predetermined depth of molten electrolyte material has been reached.

EFFECT: reduced operating load on crane and possibility of doubling number of electrolytic cells, launched during a given period of time.
