FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an electrolysis cell for aluminium production by electrolytic reduction of alumina. Electrolysis cell comprises an electrolysis bath, an anode, a cathode, a cathode support retained on the bottom of the electrolysis bath, wherein the cathode support contacts with at least one of the metal layer and the molten electrolyte bath in the electrolysis bath, wherein the cathode support comprises at least one cathode attachment for holding at least one cathode plate from a plurality of cathode plates, made in the form of a groove on the surface of the cathode support, having a depth sufficient to hold at least one cathode plate from the plurality of cathode plates. Also disclosed is embodiment of electrolysis unit, in which cathode plate has edge made with possibility of mechanical mutual engagement with multiple adjacent cathode plates, in particular first and second adjacent plates, which overlap with at least one anode. Disclosed also is a method of producing aluminium in said electrolysis cell.
EFFECT: possibility of retaining cathodes on the bottom of the electrolysis cell in a virtually vertical configuration.
