SUBSTANCE: process of adjusting the update display rate is performed by a processor in a computer that has several applications and contains stages at which: a request is accepted from the application of the multiple applications to present the frame with an adjustable update rate; a frame buffer; the time data is stored for displaying a frame with an adjustable update rate and a standard update rate different from the adjustable update rate; a request is accepted from one of the applications for any available update rates. The adjustable update rate is one of the available update rates; available update rates are provided to the application in response to the request; and a buffered frame is displayed on the display according to the time data. The computer operating system coordinates adjustments in application update rates.

EFFECT: providing improved playback of frames by adjusting the update rate of the display.
