SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in internal combustion engines. Method of an engine operation means changing the amount of exhaust gases in the exhaust gases recirculation (EGR) system supplied to engine (10) using channel (76) of the high pressure EGR and channel (81) of the low pressure EGR depending on the NOx concentration in the downstream outlet channel from catalytic converter (70) of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. Mass flow rate of the NOx is adjusted at the outlet of the engine basing on the mass flow rate of the NOx in the EGR gases supplied to the engine. Disclosed is a method to operate the engine.
EFFECT: technical result is to ensure that the engine exhausts are maintained at the required level while the fuel consumption is reduced.
