SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the area of audio encoding/decoding, especially to place encoding of audio and place encoding of audio objects, for example, 3D audio codec systems. In this method, a downmix matrix is decoded for mapping a plurality of input channels of audio content to a plurality of output channels, the input and output channels being associated with respective loudspeakers at predetermined positions relative to a listener position, herewith the downmix matrix is encoded by exploiting the symmetry of loudspeaker pairs (S1-S9) of the plurality of input channels and the symmetry of the loudspeaker pairs (S10-S11) of the plurality of output channels. Encoded information, representing the encoded downmix matrix, is received and decoded to obtain a decoded downmix matrix.

EFFECT: technical effect: increased efficiency of downmix matrix encoding.
