FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: present invention provides composition suitable as lubricant or viscosity regulator. Composition comprises a polyalphaolefin derived from a normal alpha-olefin containing at least 80% of a normal alpha-olefin C8, said polyalphaolefin comprising: a) less than 1% by weight of hydrogenated alpha-olefin monomer; b) less than 3% by weight of hydrogenated dimers and c) more than 80% by weight of hydrogenated higher oligomers and has: i) kinematic viscosity at 100 °C of at least 25 cSt; (ii) viscosity index higher than 160; (iii) pour point is below -35 °C and (iv) no discernible crystallization from differential scanning calorimetry data according to ASTM D 3418.

EFFECT: composition has a high viscosity index in combination with a low pour point, with no detectable crystallization down to sufficiently low temperatures, which makes them particularly suitable in lubricant compositions and as viscosity regulators.
