SUBSTANCE: invention relates to digital television and can be used to diagnose digital television broadcasting systems. In the method for detecting image distortions in a digital television system, the source and monitored digital television signals are received. Split the frame of the source and monitored digital television signal into segments of equal area Se[i] and Sk[i]. Calculate for each pair Se[i] and Sk[i] a pair of histograms of the modulus of the gradient of brightness He[i] and Hk[i] from M intervals. Calculate for He[i] the vector Ve[i], the j-th element of which corresponds to the ordinal number of the j-th interval He[i] in the ordered set of values of the latter, and for Hk[i] the vector Vk[i] whose j-th element corresponds to the ordinal number of the j-th interval Hk[i] in an ordered ascending set of values of the latter. Calculate for each of i the rank correlation coefficient Cr[i] of the vectors Vk[i] and Ve[i]. If Cr[i] does not exceed the Th threshold for i, the fact of the image distortion of the i-th segment in the digital television system is detected.
