FIELD: biotechnology.

SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to articles made of poly(trimethylene-furandicarboxylate). Described is an article, comprising: a substrate comprising a first surface and a second surface, wherein the second surface is in contact with the external environment, wherein the substrate comprises a polymer comprising poly(trimethylene furancarboxylate), having a repeating unit of the formula:

where n is from 10 to 1000, where the content of poly (trimethylene furancarboxylate) is from 0.1 to 99.9 % of the total polymer weight and wherein the polymer provides improved gas barrier properties of the substrate compared to a substrate made from freshly prepared poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET), expressed as

where GPTF is the measured gas barrier value for PTF and GPET is the measured gas barrier value for PET, where the barrier properties for oxygen, carbon dioxide or moisture are measured according to ASTM D3985-05, ASTM F2476-05, ASTM F1249-06, respectively, where the improvement with respect to oxygen is 2–99 %, the improvement with respect to carbon dioxide is 11–99 % and the improvement in moisture is 3–99 %. Also described is a polymer composition for improving the gas barrier properties of an article, comprising at least one of: i) a poly(trimethylenefurancarboxylate) polymer having a repeating unit of the formula:

where n is from 10 to 1,000 and the content of poly(trimethylenefurancarboxylate) is from 0.1 to 99.9 % of the total weight of the polymer composition; or ii) a copolymer containing units derived from 2,5-furandicarboxylate, 1,3-propanediol and terephthalate, wherein the weight percentage of repeating units of PTF in the copolymer is 0.1 to 99.9 % of the total weight of the copolymer; or iii) a polymer mixture containing a) poly(trimethylenefurancarboxylate) as defined above, and poly(alkyleneterephthalate), wherein the polymer mixture contains 0.1–99.9 % by weight of poly(trimethylenefurandicarboxylate) based on the total weight of the polymer mixture, or b) a polymer mixture containing poly (trimethylenefurancarboxylate), as defined above, and poly(alkylenefurandicarboxylate), and where the polymer mixture contains 0.1–99.9 % by weight of poly(trimethylenefurandicarboxylate) based on the total weight of the polymer mixture, and wherein the poly(alkylenefurandicarboxylate) is not poly(trimethylenefurandicarboxylate); where the polymer provides improved gas barrier properties of the substrate compared to a substrate made from freshly prepared poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), expressed as

where GPTF is the measured gas barrier value for PTF and GPET is the measured gas barrier value for PET, where the barrier properties with respect to oxygen, carbon dioxide or moisture are measured in accordance with ASTM D3985-05, ASTM F2476-05, ASTM F1249-06, respectively, where the oxygen improvement is 2–99 %, the improvement with respect to carbon dioxide is 11–99 % and the improvement in moisture is 3–99 %.

EFFECT: technical result is obtaining a composition for improving the gas barrier properties of an article with respect to oxygen, carbon dioxide and moisture.
