FIELD: measuring devices.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to measurement equipment. Device and a method for measuring timber (4) in wood handling machine (1) wherein the timber is grabbed by cutting head (3), arranged to set of booms (2) of the wood handling machine. Timber dimensions are measured with at least one measuring device in the wood handling machine. Measuring signal field, formed by one or more measuring beam (6) is directed to timber (4) by means of monitoring device (5), using a non-contact measurement. Point cloud (7) generated by the measuring signal field is recorded in a memory device. Parts to be identified are identified from this point cloud, parameter to be measured is determined and is formed from the information content of the point cloud. Obtained result is directed to a measuring system of the wood handling machine for further use.

EFFECT: technical result is the simplification and improvement of the accuracy of timber measurement.
