FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a water separator for fuel and a solid particle removal filter designed to provide high efficiency in the removal of water and solid particles. Composite medium is formed of at least three layers of material in the direction of flow, namely layer A, optional layer B, layer C and layer D. Layers have the following characteristics: layer A comprises a material from a polymeric medium having an average pore size greater than about 10 μm. With respect to the layer immediately downstream of layer A, layer A has a higher porosity, a larger pore size, a larger average fiber diameter, a higher Frazier permeability, and a lower contaminant removal efficiency; layer C comprises a polymeric material comprising nanofibers and has an average pore size of 0.2-10 μm; a ratio of the maximum pore size to an average pore size is less than about 3, an average fiber diameter is 0.1-1.0 μm, and a basis weight is more than about 20 g/m2; and layer D comprises a polymeric material having an average pore size greater than about 10 μm, and supports the preceding layers. With respect to the layer immediately upstream of layer D, layer D has a higher porosity, a larger pore size, a greater average fiber diameter, a higher Frazier permeability, and a lower contaminant removal efficiency, the composite medium having a permeability of less than about 40 cubic ft per minute.

EFFECT: invention provides an improved ability to separate fuel-water mixtures.
