FIELD: filter elements.

SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to various configurations of filter elements, where a layer in the form of a substrate defines a surface characterized by processing. Also provided is a barrier vent assembly comprising a backing layer comprising a first surface characterized by a treatment that increases the roll-off angle for a 50 mcl water droplet if the first surface is immersed in toluene, wherein the backing layer defines a perimeter region and a central region that is central relative to the perimeter region; and wherein the perimeter region is configured to connect to the housing around an opening defined by the housing. In another embodiment, a fuel filtration system is provided, comprising a filter element configured to coalesce water in a stream of fuel; a barrier assembly in fluid communication with the filter element, wherein the barrier assembly is located downstream of the filter element, and wherein the barrier assembly defines an upstream surface, wherein the upstream surface is characterized by a treatment that increases the rolling angle of the droplet 50 mcl of water if the upstream surface is immersed in toluene. Also provided are a filter element comprising a housing and a first substrate layer disposed in the housing, wherein the first substrate layer defines a first surface and a second surface, wherein the first surface is characterized by a treatment that increases the rolling angle for a 50 mcl water droplet, if the first surface is immersed in toluene, and the layer in the form of the first substrate is in a helical configuration. A tangential filter element comprising a first substrate defining a tubular structure comprising an outer radial surface and an inner radial surface, the filter element defining an upstream side within the inner radial surface and a downstream side outside the outer radial surface and wherein at least one of the outer radial surface and the inner radial surface is characterized by a treatment that increases the rolling angle for a 50 mcl water droplet when the outer radial surface is immersed in toluene.

EFFECT: provides various configurations of filter elements that have improved efficiency in separating water from a hydrocarbon fluid.
