FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to electroplating and can be used for packaging applications. Method comprises electrolytically depositing a chromium metal - chromium oxide coating on a substrate in a single step from an electrolyte containing a mixture of basic chromium sulphate, a chelating agent and a conductivity enhancing salt to which an acid or base is added to adjust the pH, the cation in the chelating agent and the conductivity enhancing salt is an alkali metal cation and the chelating agent contains an anion of formic acid, wherein in order to ensure the deposition of chromium metal, the cathode current density threshold is exceeded to achieve a predetermined pH at the surface of the substrate that is higher than the pH in the electrolyte volume.
EFFECT: technical result: higher corrosion resistance and resistance to sulphur staining.
