SUBSTANCE: invention relates to electroplating and can be used for packaging applications. This method for manufacturing a substrate coated with a chromium metal-chromium oxide coating comprises electrolytic deposition of the chromium metal-chromium oxide coating based on an electrically conductive substrate in one step from an electrolyte solution that contains a trivalent chromium compound and a chelating agent, wherein the electrolyte solution does not contain chloride ions and a buffering agent, the electroconductive substrate acts as a cathode, and an anode containing a catalytic coating of iridium oxide or a mixture of iridium and tantalum oxides is selected to reduce or eliminate the oxidation of Cr (III)-ions to Cr (VI)-ions.
EFFECT: technical result: providing deposition of a coating from a solution of trivalent chromium, avoiding the formation of hexavalent chromium and gaseous chlorine, preferably in one step, at a high deposition rate from a simple electrolyte without a buffer.
