SUBSTANCE: group of inventions refers to the field of identification of eggs. Egg identification system for determining viability of an avian egg includes a conveyor system configured to convey an egg flat containing eggs, emitter assembly configured to emit electromagnetic radiation toward one of the eggs, non-contact detector assembly axially aligned with the emitter assembly and having a spectrometer, processor is configured to share data with the spectrometer and to process an output signal of the non-contact detector assembly for determining viability of the egg. Wherein the non-contact detector assembly is configured to detect the electromagnetic radiation transmitted through the egg, and is disposed in a non-contact position such that the egg positioned for identification is spaced-apart from the non-contact detector assembly during operation thereof. Also disclosed is an egg identification system comprising an array of emitter-detector pairs, as well as options of methods for determining egg viability.

EFFECT: group of inventions provides accurate identification of living and non-living eggs without contacting the eggs during operation, as well as an increased throughput of spectroscopic detection.
