FIELD: chemistry; metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to vertical or inclined electrodes of an electrolytic cell for the electrolytic production of aluminum from aluminum oxide. Electrode contains the electrode base and a surface coating based on refractory ceramics. According to a first variant of the invention, the electrode base is made of a composite material with a content of from 5 to 90 wt% of refractory ceramics and at least one metal with a melting point higher than 1,000°C, which forms in the interaction with aluminum refractory intermetallides, and/or with the content of at least one alloy of such a metal. According to a second embodiment of the invention, the electrode base is made of a metal alloy, for example, structural steel or another alloy, with an intermediate layer of a composite material of the composition described above applied to the surface of the electrode substrate.
EFFECT: it provides an increase in the resistance of the base to oxidation, a reduction in the material consumption and the cost of the electrode.
