FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for electrolysis of cryolite-alumina melts using solid cathodes. Method includes correction of composition of electrolyte with fluorides, chlorides and oxides of sodium, potassium, aluminium, boron and synthesis of corrosion-resistant compounds on electrode surface, in which boron-containing components are dosed and boron reduction on solid cathode surface combined with aluminium is carried out until its content in aluminium is within 0.0020÷0.0060 wt. %, and recovery and maintenance of chemical and physical homogeneity of the cathode surface is carried out by interaction of boron with introduced and/or acquired impurities in the cathode.
EFFECT: stabilization of cathode processes and technological course of electrolysis of molten salts as a whole with subsequent possibility of ACD; anode-to-cathode distance reduction, electric power consumption and increase of current output.
