FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to non-ferrous metallurgy, namely to electrolytic production of aluminum, and can be used for protection of cathode blocks of aluminum electrolyzers with burned anodes to reduce wear of cathode blocks and prolongation of service life. Method of producing protective composite coating TiB2-C of cathode blocks of aluminum electrolyzers with burned anodes includes preparation of composite mixture of refractory material with binder, applying the mixture onto the surface of the cathode blocks and drying the obtained coating. Binder is used in form of sulphonated products of reaction of naphthalene with formaldehyde with coke residue of not less than 30 wt%, refractory material is used in form of bimodal or polymodal mixture of powders of titanium diboride or titanium diboride powder, granulometric composition of which is characterized by bimodal or multimodal particle size distribution. After drying, a layer of graphite powder is applied on the surface of the coating for protection against oxidation during start-up with formation of TiB2-C protective composite coating wetted with aluminum when heating the hearth.
EFFECT: use of the invention reduces wear and prolongs service life of cathode blocks of aluminum electrolysis cells with burned anodes.
