FIELD: recycling and disposal of waste.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to solid waste destruction technology or processing thereof. Method for preparing graphite radioactive waste for disposal includes placing irradiated graphite in a thermal chamber, carrying out thermal destruction by blowing a gaseous inert medium through a thermal chamber, removal of gas products of destruction into an inert medium. Nuclear graphite without grinding is preliminarily placed in a solution containing 6–7.5 M strong acid with the addition of a modifying reagent and held for 10–15 hours at a temperature of 95±3 °C, thermal degradation is carried out for 75–90 minutes at a temperature of 850±15 °C. After the thermal destruction process is completed, the thermal chamber with the graphite placed in it is cooled by continuous pumping of the inert gas to a temperature of less than 600 °C. Processed graphite is removed from the thermal chamber and placed in a packaging container with clay-containing barrier material for disposal.
EFFECT: invention reduces the time of heat treatment of irradiated graphite and the amount of secondary radioactive waste generated.
