FIELD: technological processes.

SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a process for the preparation of 1,2-propylene glycol by hydrogenation of glycerol at elevated pressure and temperature in the presence of a copper-containing catalyst in a reactor. Process is carried out at a pressure of 20–30 atm in a three-phase reactor with the supply of glycerol and hydrogen to the upper part of the reactor, while glycerin flows over the surface of the catalyst particles at a specific consumption of 0.20–0.70 l/h, the hydrogen flow rate is set at a level such that the conversion rate is in the range of 50–90 %.

EFFECT: proposed method makes it possible to produce 1,2-propylene glycol with high selectivity with a minimum hydrogen supply and without the use of an additional solvent.
