FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a method of producing 1,2-propanediol, which is used as a component of braking fluids and hydraulic fluids, lubricant materials and antifreeze, in cosmetic preparations, in food industry and as solvents for fats, oils, resins and paints. The method involves reaction of glycerine, having purity of at least 95 wt %, with hydrogen at hydrogen pressure from 20 to 100 bars and temperature from 180 to 240°C in the presence of a catalyst which contains from 10 to 50 wt % copper oxide and from 50 to 90 wt % zinc oxide, and which is activated before the reaction in a stream of hydrogen at temperature from 170 to 240°C in an autoclave.
EFFECT: method enables to obtain an end product with high selectivity and high output in one cycle per unit time.
