FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process for the preparation of a mixture of benzene and C8-aromatic compounds. Method involves: providing a feed stream containing benzene, toluene, C8-aromatic compounds and C9-aromatic hydrocarbons; separating from the feed stream of the first fraction containing C8-aromatic compounds, a methylation feedstock containing toluene and not containing benzene, and a feedstock for transalkylation containing benzene and C9-aromatic hydrocarbons; feeding the methylation feed to the methylation reaction to obtain a mixture of C8- and C9+ aromatic compounds; supplying raw materials for transalkylation and C9+ aromatic compounds derived from the methylation reaction to a transalkylation reaction for the conversion of C9-aromatic hydrocarbons and C9+-aromatic compounds from the methylation reaction in C8-aromatic compounds; and transferring the fraction of benzene and toluene obtained from the methylation reaction to a transalkylation reaction to maintain the molar ratio of the methyl group to the phenyl group in the range of 1.5-2.2 in the transalkylation reaction.
EFFECT: this complex method maximizes the production of xylenes and reduces or minimizes the yield of benzene.
