FIELD: chemical or physical processes.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for the production of a supported copper catalyst for oxychlorination of ethylene by (i) impregnating, at a first step, an alumina support with a first aqueous solution including copper, an alkali metal and optionally an alkali earth metal to thereby form a first catalyst component; and (ii) impregnating, at the next step, the first catalyst component with a second aqueous solution containing copper and an alkali earth metal. Second aqueous solution is substantially free of alkali metal to thereby form a supported catalyst, the molar ratio of the alkali earth metal to copper in the second aqueous solution is greater than 0.19, thereby providing the first catalyst component with an additional alkali earth metal.

EFFECT: technical result is a catalyst with less tendency to stick during the process of oxychlorination of ethylene to 1,2-dichloroethane and improved selectivity.
