FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of analytical chemistry, namely to the photometric method of analysis, and can be used to determine the content of iron (III) in solutions of pure salts containing iron (III) in a very low concentration. Method of photometric determination of iron (III) comprises conversion of iron (III) to a complex compound with an organic reagent – xylenol orange and surfactant in a weak acid medium, addition of distilled water to 10 ml volume with heating in a water bath at a temperature of 60–80 °C and subsequent photometry of the resulting solution after its cooling, characterized in that, to (0.8–2)∙10-4 M solution iron (III) with pH of 3.5–4.0, generated by the addition of 3.0 ml of acetate buffer, add 0.5 ml of 1∙10-2 M solution of xylenol orange and 0.1 ml of 4∙10-3 M solution of the surfactant in the form ethoxylate of isodecyl alcohol, while heating in a water bath is carried out for 10 minutes, and photometry is performed at a wavelength equal to 440 nm, and a cuvette thickness of 1 cm.

EFFECT: invention makes it possible to shorten the time of the analysis, improve its reproducibility, and increase the color stability of the resulting complex compound.
