SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the modernization of an ammonia synthesis plant. Method for upgrading the inlet portion of an ammonia synthesis plant, said inlet portion supplying the produced gas for ammonia synthesis and comprising conversion section including an air-heated secondary reformer or an autothermal conversion unit operating under pressure in the inlet part, purification section of the stream leaving the conversion section, air compressor initially installed to supply air to the conversion section for use as an oxidant, method comprising directing the containing O2 flow into the conversion section for use as an oxidant, introducing a stream of nitrogen at a suitable point in the inlet to provide the required molar ratio of hydrogen to nitrogen in the produced gas and compressing the nitrogen flow by means of an air compressor.
EFFECT: invention provides a reduction in the cost of upgrading the plant.
