FIELD: technological processes.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and installation for producing ammonia and an ammonia derivative, such as urea, from natural gas feedstock, as well as to a method for upgrading an apparatus for the synthesis of ammonia and urea. Method includes the conversion of natural gas to synthesis gas in an input part, synthesis of ammonia from synthesis gas in a synthesis loop, the use of at least part of ammonia to produce an ammonia derivative. Method is carried out with energy consumers (2) and heat consumers (3). Part (15) of natural gas feedstock is used to supply piston gas engine (6) with fuel, and the energy (7) produced by gas engine (6) is used to meet, at least in part, the energy needs of energy consumers (2). Further, heat is recovered from the exhaust gas of the gas engine and at least part of the heat is recovered to provide at least one of said heat consumers (3) with heat. Heat recovered from the exhaust gas of the gas engine is at least part of low-temperature heat (10) transferred to at least one of the heat consumers through a heat transfer medium, which is heated by indirect heat exchange.
EFFECT: reduction of energy consumption in ammonia synthesis apparatus.
