SUBSTANCE: invention relates to drilling wells and can be used to determine the distance and direction between adjacent wells. In particular, a method for ranging based on surface excitation is proposed, comprising: installing configurable grounding device for a power supply located on the ground surface, with a configurable grounding device meeting resistance criteria or ranging-ranging criteria; supplying an electric current exiting the power supply along a target well containing a metal casing; Measurement of electromagnetic (EM) fields propagated from the target well as a result of electric current flow; and using the distance or direction information from the measured EM fields to control the direction of drilling a new well relative to the target well. System for implementing this method is also disclosed.

EFFECT: technical result is expanded arsenal of technical means for determining the distance between the wells.
