FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to systems for generating an electric field at a considerable depth and area in the earth. System comprises at least one conductor in electrical contact with the earth and extending to a depth of at least 50 m; a plurality of electrodes arranged with offset at a radial distance from the conductor along the earth's surface of at least 0.2 times the depth of the conductor; a transmitter for supplying an output voltage or current, that is electrically connected to a plurality of spaced apart electrodes and to said conductor, and when setting the output voltage or current within the earth, a plurality of current paths is created between each of the plurality of electrodes and the conductor in the depth range of the conductor; and an array of electromagnetic sensors placed above the area of interest for measuring one or more electromagnetic fields or one or more electromagnetic field components that can be matched to the subsurface characteristics of the earth.

EFFECT: invention makes it possible to extend the horizontal range of configuration of electromagnetic field sources and eliminate the need for a wired connection of a feed electrode located deep in the borehole.
