FIELD: distance measurement.

SUBSTANCE: distance measurement method based on surface excitation, including the selection of the first well with a metal casing as the target well and selecting a second well with a metal casing as a grounded well. Method also includes installing an auxiliary grounding device for a power supply located on the surface of the earth, the grounded well and the auxiliary grounding device meet the resistance criteria or the criteria for the effectiveness of ranging. Method also includes applying electric current flowing from a power source along the target well. Method also includes measuring electromagnetic (EM) fields, distributed from the target well as a result of the flow of electric current.

EFFECT: method also includes using information about the distance or direction obtained from the detected EM fields to direct the drilling of a new well relative to the target well.
