FIELD: electricity.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a laser ablation cell and a method for its operation. Cell comprises flow channel (11) having an essentially constant cross-sectional area so as to ensure a strictly laminar flow in flow channel (11). Sample chamber (21) is provided adjacent to lateral opening (14) of the flow channel. Laser beam (41) enters sample chamber (21) through lateral window (16) and impinges on surface (24) of sample (23) to ablate material from the sample. Sample may be positioned at such a distance from the flow channel that the laser-generated aerosol mass distribution has its centre within the flow channel, which leads to short aerosol washout times.
EFFECT: increasing resolution without increasing the overall remediation time.
