FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the treatment of gases. In order to recover sulphur from a gas stream containing hydrogen sulphide, the following steps are carried out. Generating a gas stream comprising hydrogen sulphide and passing the gas stream into an apparatus comprising thermal and catalytic processing regions. Catalytic region comprises an oxygen scavenging material containing iron. In the thermal region, part of the hydrogen sulphide reacts to form sulphur dioxide and water vapour, and the rest of the hydrogen sulphide reacts to form sulphur vapour and water vapour. Gas mixture is passed to the catalytic region. Part of the hydrogen sulphide reacts to further form sulphur vapour and water vapour. After the thermal and catalytic region, the sulphur vapour is condensed to form liquid sulphur and the liquid sulphur is passed into a sulphur pit. Off-gas generated or contained in the sulphur pit is returned to the process downstream of the thermal reaction region.
EFFECT: ensuring higher efficiency of treatment of hydrogen sulphide-containing gas and higher sulphur recovery.
