FIELD: oil, gas and coke-chemical industry.

SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to the petrochemical industry, specifically to a method of retrofitting a plant for reducing sulphur emissions, comprising a Claus process plant which produces elementary sulphur. Claus apparatus comprises a Claus reaction furnace and one or more Claus conversion stages, wherein each Claus conversion step includes a conversion reactor, and an elementary sulphur condensation means, and residual Claus gas oxidation means configured to receive residual Claus gas from said Claus process unit and configured to provide oxidized residual Claus gas. Proposed method comprises steps a-d. Step a) provides a residual gas treatment plant which produces sulphuric acid to obtain sulphuric acid. Step b) provides a means for temporary storage of sulphuric acid obtained in said plant for treating residual gases, which produces sulphuric acid, having a volume corresponding to the amount of sulphuric acid produced at said plant for treating residual gases, which produces sulphuric acid for 4 to 120 hours. Step c) is provided by means of transferring an amount or all the sulphuric acid obtained in a residual gas treatment plant producing sulphuric acid into said means for temporary storage of sulphuric acid, and step d) provides means for transferring sulphuric acid from said means for temporary storage of sulphuric acid into said Claus reaction furnace. Method is characterized by the fact that the molar ratio of sulphur in the transferred sulphuric acid to the moles of elementary sulphur withdrawn from the said Claus process plant ranges from 3 to 20 %. In accordance with the present invention, a method of converting H2S into elemental sulphur with high efficiency is disclosed, in which the Claus process is modified by adding an integrated sulphuric acid process.

EFFECT: providing an improved method of upgrading an installation to reduce sulphur emissions.
