FIELD: technological processes.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to purification of magnesium from impurities. Method includes refining magnesium in a heated pot installed in an electric furnace to produce pre-purified molten magnesium, pouring the purified molten magnesium into casting molds, holding the resulting magnesium castings, extracting them from molds, loading magnesium castings into a sublimation device, heating them, subliming the magnesium vapor and condensing them in a retort condenser, cooling the sublimation device, recovering the condensate magnesium from the retort condenser. Refining of magnesium is carried out with a mixture consisting of titanium melt and bromide flux at a titanium melt : flux bromide ratio = (2–1):1. Before loading in the device for sublimation of the castings, magnesium is crushed to the size of pieces of 50–100 mm. Distillation is carried out by sealing the sublimation device and evacuating it without heating to residual pressure of 0.027 kPa, while after heating to a temperature of 800 °C high-temperature soak is carried out within 3–5 hours at constant pumping out of the sublimation device, and after the end of high-temperature soak, heating and pumping of the sublimation device is stopped, and then argon is fed into it.
EFFECT: increase in degree of purification of magnesium from impurities is provided.
