SUBSTANCE: invention relates to internal combustion engines. In the method, the device for starting a vehicle engine contains a belt-driven starter generator, a starter motor and an electronic controller that uses the starter motor to crank the engine if the engine temperature is below a predetermined temperature limit. Otherwise, a starter-alternator with a belt drive is used to crank the engine, provided that the starter-generator with the belt drive is capable of cranking the engine at a speed exceeding the predetermined rotational speed or is capable of creating an acceleration of the engine exceeding the specified acceleration.
EFFECT: improved engine start.
