SUBSTANCE: invention relates to internal combustion engines, in particular to a method and apparatus for the improved operation of such an engine. Method for starting and operating the engine 11 of a ISG vehicle 5 after starting for an engine, including low-voltage and high-voltage starter devices 13 and 14, controlled by an electronic controller 10. Method involves the use of high-voltage starter device 14 as a motor for cranking the engine 11 each time, when possible, which allows to partially discharge the high-voltage battery 18. Also provides for the use of high-voltage starter device 14 as a generator after starting the engine 11, if you want to increase the temperature of the exhaust gases to accelerate the heating of one or more devices 6 of the treatment of exhaust gases.

EFFECT: technical result is the improvement of the engine.
