SUBSTANCE: variable compression ratio internal combustion engine is equipped with variable compression ratio mechanism (10) capable of varying the compression ratio of the engine in accordance with the angular position of control shaft (14) and housing (22), which accommodates drive motor (20) for changing and retaining the angular position of control shaft (14). Learning of the reference position of control shaft (14) is performed in a state where the maximum rotation position of control shaft (14) in first rotation direction (R1) is mechanically limited by bringing first movable part (51), which works together with control shaft (14), into an adjacent contact with first stopper (52). First stopper (52) is provided outside the motor housing. Then, the maximum range of the angle of rotation of the control shaft is trained in a state where the position of the maximum rotation of the control shaft in the second direction of rotation is mechanically limited by the second stop.
EFFECT: technical result is increased accuracy of detecting the compression ratio of the engine.
