SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for drawing an optical fiber by heating and melting a glass preform in a furnace. At the start of the drawing, the outer peripheral surface of optical fiber glass preform 11 is sealed with first sealing portion 17 of the seal mechanism. After a close vicinity of the conical portion of optical fiber glass preform 11 begins to pass through first sealing portion 17, a transition is made to second sealing portion 18 disposed above first sealing portion 17, and the outer peripheral surface of coupling member 20 fixedly surrounding the outer periphery of rod 12 is sealed by second sealing portion 18.

EFFECT: volume of space in the drawing furnace is reduced with the possibility of reducing the pressure variations in the furnace, and the side of the hole for inserting the glass preform is stably sealed.
