FIELD: optics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of making optical fibre. Disclosed is a method of making optical fibre, in which the core of the workpiece is connected to the surrounding area of the upper end of the glass preform, which includes a part with a reduced diameter in its upper part. Glass preform is heated for melting in the drawing furnace in order to draw the optical fibre. Cap element is provided in place of the part with reduced diameter, and the upper end of the cap element is located close to the bottom end of the workpiece rod. When an orthogonal coordinate axis is given, in which the ratio of the outer diameter of the cap element to the glass preform is given as the horizontal axis x, and the ratio of the outer diameter of the workpiece rod to the glass preform is given as the vertical axis y, the ratio of the outer diameter x of the cap member and the ratio of the outer diameter of the workpiece rod satisfy the given mathematical expression.
EFFECT: technical result is reduced change in outer diameter of optical fibre.
